Corporate Accountant

Horizon Maritime Services, a fast growing and vibrant Marine company operating across Canada, has an immediate opening in its Dartmouth, Nova Scotia office for a qualified and results oriented Corporate Accountant. This is an exciting opportunity for an individual to work with a very experienced and talented accounting team.

 Job Opportunity

Reporting directly to the Controller, the Corporate Accountant shall hold responsibility for the financial reporting and billings processes of Horizon Maritime Services Ltd. and its subsidiaries. The successful candidate will be responsible for assisting with cash management, various other accounting responsibilities and other special projects as required.  Job duties include:

  • Preparing and posting month end accruals, prepaids, payroll and other journal entries to ensure the accuracy of monthly reporting
  • Reconciling various clearing accounts and addressing action items as required
  • Drafting of monthly, quarterly and annual operating results, including explanations for variances to budget
  • Reviewing the coding of accounts payable invoices to ensure accuracy of the allocated department, account code and capitalization treatment, as applicable
  • Preparing weekly and monthly bank reconciliations
  • Drafting invoices to be sent to customers and managing the timing of invoicing to optimize cash inflows
  • Ensuring rapid and consistent collection of receivables
  • Coordinating the interim and year-end audits and preparation of audited financial statements, with support from the Controller

Required Knowledge, Skills & Experience

  • 2+ years of progressive experience in finance/accounting required. Experience with financial reporting and full cycle accounting preferred.
  • Strong problem solving and decision-making skills
  • High level critical and logical thinking, analysis, and reasoning skills
  • Good project management skills and the ability to produce quality work within tight timeframes
  • Experience assisting with audits performed by external audit firms is an asset
  • Knowledge of MS Office, specifically Excel, and other accounting software required
  • Able to work well as part of a team and independently
  • Works well under pressure to meet set deadlines
  • Attention to detail in all areas of work
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills


Education & Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business and Accounting
  • The ideal candidate will have recently obtained their CPA designation, or has written the Common Final Examination (CFE) and is working on the practical experience component of their designation
