Reports to the Executive Director

The Finance Manager will be directly responsible for the financial management of the Mi’kmaw Native Friendship Centre, the administration of its financial operations and strategic financial planning. He or she will provide financial leadership, manage budgets, oversee accounting functions and conduct forecast analysis. He or she will provide regular reports on the organization’s progress to both the Executive Director and the Board of Directors. The Finance Manager is responsible for systems, compliance and accuracy of detail, consolidation of reports and accounting analysis. The Finance Manager supervises the finance unit and is the spokesperson for the department. The Finance Manager must work within the organization’s policies and procedures and in compliance with legislation.

Finance Manager Job Duties:

  • Maintain the financial health of the organization
  • Oversee operations of the finance department, set goals and objectives and design a framework for these to be met
  • Provide leadership in overall financial planning including preparing for and facilitating annual operating budgets
  • Prepare and submit financial reports
  • Ensure department staff are competent in the basic accounting functions required for department
  • Control all accounts ensuring that files are properly set up, that the payments received and properly accounted for, that business client contacts are well managed and that business clients have easy access to knowledgeable staff to resolve any inquires
  • Create a positive work environment and culture within the department, provide clear objectives and performance expectations for all department staff and provide support necessary to deliver against the expectations for their roles. Train, supervise and evaluate department staff.
  • Complete all required reports for the Executive Director to submit to the Society board, Federal and Provincial government in a timely manner and complete reporting to appropriate agencies
  • Initiate and lead regular financial performance reviews and discussion of monthly results with the Executive Director and management team, as necessary, including oral and written reports
  • Remain up to date on knowledge of financial theory and techniques, current trends, complex computer applications and modeling tools for finance
  • Ensure compliance with local, Provincial and Federal budgetary reporting requirements
  • Ensure records systems are maintained in accordance with generally accepted auditing standards
  • Cash flow reporting, monitoring and analysis
  • Budget and forecast preparation
  • Identify and analyze information to give early warning of potential problems and recommend corrective action
  • Support in the preparation of books for audit
  • Other accounting, finance and special project responsibilities as required

Requirements

  • Extensive experience with Simply/Sage Accounting
  • University degree in a business-related field such as commerce, finance, economics, accounting or business administration or equivalent
  • Professional designation in accounting an asset
  • Knowledge of Caseware an asset
  • 5 - 10 years hands-on accounting experience
  • Proven success within a deadline-driven environment
  • Effective attention to detail and a high degree of accuracy
  • High degree of integrity, confidentiality and accountability
  • Ability to motivate team to produce quality materials within tight timeframes and simultaneously manage several projects
  • Ability to respond appropriately in pressure situations with a calm and steady demeanor
  • Able to build and maintain lasting relationships with other departments, key business partners and government agencies
  • Advanced knowledge of MS Excel
